WASHINGTON —
The Trump administration launched a new app Monday that will provide immigrants living illegally in the United States with a choice to "self deport" instead of risking potential arrest and detention, continuing President Donald Trump's effort on deportations.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection app, titled CBP Home, will provide a choice for an individual to indicate their "intent to depart," the agency said.
The CBP Home app provides the aliens with a choice to leave immediately and self-deport, so they will still have the chance to return legally in the future and realize the American dream," Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote in a statement. "If they don't, we will find them, we will deport them, and they will never return.
Trump, the Republican, pledged to deport a record number of migrants in the country illegally. Trump's deportation figures in the first months of his presidency were behind the fiscal year 2024 monthly average under Democrat Joe Biden, while Biden's figures included large numbers of recent crossers of the border.
Other actions by the Trump administration also have the potential to push illegal immigrants out of the United States.
A rule issued by the Trump administration that is to go into effect April 11 would compel individuals who are not in legal status to register with the federal government or risk being fined or incarcerated.
CBP Home supplants an app called CBP One that was introduced during Biden's administration. The Biden-era app featured a function whereby some 1 million migrants in Mexico were able to book an appointment to seek entry at a lawful border crossing.
The Republicans denounced the Biden program, describing it as enacting mass immigration to the U.S. and failing to adequately screen migrants.
Trump suspended CBP One shortly after entering office, with migrants who had scheduled appointments finding themselves stranded and without direction on what to do next.
