Both a vote resolution on behalf of the United States and on behalf of Ukraine and supported by the European Union to end the war in Ukraine, are to be voted on by the UN this Monday.
The UN General Assembly will take a vote on the Ukrainian draft resolution and the US draft resolution. The U.N. Security Council is scheduled to meet and vote on the U.S. draft in the afternoon.
U.S.(as of this writing)state<>There is a valid need to stop the "war as soon as possible and afterwards keep Ukraine at peace with the Russian Federation.
Yet, the resolution did not address Russia's attack on Ukraine--which began three years ago today.
U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Friday that the resolution will "recognize that this conflict is horrible, that the United Nations can help stop it, and that peace is available.
This is our chance, to make real progress toward peace," Rubio stated in a press release.
[The Ukrainian Resolution states that the actions of the "Russian invasion is "going on now for 3 years and still devastating and damagingly long-lasting effect not only in Ukraine but all over the world and the stability of the world".
A reduction in intensity of hostilities, an early ceasefire to the war, and a scheme for getting a peaceful end to the war with Ukraine, all of which are and involve tensions that this war must be brought to a definitive end in 2023.
As per the Ukrainian draft it is U n " ef required to implement all the resolutions adopted by the General Assembly in the past without delay, and not only the ones relating to withdrawal of the Russian Federation from Ukraine's internationally recognised territory in its entirety [UN] .
General Assembly resolutions are not binding in the law, but they carry effects on the international community in the form of moral pressure [4].
However, in the Security Council, a resolution is contingent upon the approval of the majority of the 15 states with no votes cast by the permanent members—United Kingdom, China, France, Russia, and United States of America—offering their vetoes. U.S. estimate is projected to hold enough votes by Monday.
[Votes] take place amid French President Emmanuel Macron's trip to the US to meet with President Donald Trump, during which the war in Ukraine is expected to be on the agenda.
Last week Macron announced that he is going to tell Trump that US president cannot be "weaselly" during Russia's Vladimir Putin (Moscow Times, 26 Mar 2017).
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in Washington this week to grapple with the same problem, and, like Macron, has argued that the sovereignty of Ukraine should "be at the centre" of any peace settlement plan.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and European Council president Antonio Costa went to Kyiv on the Monday "in solidarity with Ukraine.
“We are in Kyiv today, because Ukraine is Europe, von der Leyen said on X. But in this fight to survive it's not only Ukraine's destiny that is in jeopardy. It’s Europe’s destiny.”
