Ukraine Captures Two North Korean Soldiers in Kursk Region

In a notable development on January 11, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had captured two North Korean soldiers in Russia's Kursk region. This marks the first public acknowledgment of North Korean military personnel being detained since they reportedly began assisting Russian forces last autumn.

The soldiers, aged 20 and 26, were apprehended by Ukrainian special forces during combat and are currently being treated for injuries in Kyiv. They are being interrogated by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), with assistance from South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) due to language barriers.

This capture further highlights North Korea's ongoing support for Russian military efforts in Ukraine, with estimates suggesting up to 12,000 North Korean soldiers have been deployed. The collaboration between Russia and North Korea continues to draw international concern, and this incident is expected to fuel diplomatic tensions.

The Ukrainian government sees this as irrefutable proof of North Korea's involvement in the conflict, likely influencing the broader geopolitical narrative surrounding the war.
