Tel Aviv hit by projectile fired from Yemen, say Israeli officials

Israeli emergency services work at the scene of a missile strike that, according to Israel’s military, was launched from Yemen and landed in Jaffa, south of Tel Aviv, Israel, December 21, 2024.

On December 21, 2024, a missile launched from Yemen struck Jaffa, a southern district of Tel Aviv, marking a rare instance of a failed interception over Israel’s second-largest city. According to the Israeli military, the projectile was fired from Yemen, triggering air raid sirens across central Israel before landing in Jaffa. Despite extensive air defense systems protecting Tel Aviv, the interception attempt failed, allowing the missile to impact the area directly.

The aftermath of the strike resulted in significant disruption and injuries. At least 16 individuals suffered minor wounds from glass fragments caused by shattered windows in nearby buildings. Another 14 people sustained minor injuries while rushing to seek shelter, and seven others were treated for panic-related symptoms, as reported by Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency services. While the physical damage was limited, the psychological toll on residents was considerable, especially given the rarity of such direct hits in Tel Aviv, the commercial and diplomatic heart of Israel.

Since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated in October 2023, the region has seen an increase in missile and rocket attacks from various fronts, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and even Iran. These groups, all aligned as part of an Iran-backed coalition, have escalated their operations against Israel, citing its actions in Gaza as justification. The Houthis, in particular, have targeted not only Israeli cities but also commercial vessels in the Red Sea, one of the world’s most vital shipping routes. They have vowed to continue their strikes until a ceasefire is implemented in Gaza.

The conflict has also brought catastrophic consequences to Gaza and Lebanon. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and a severe humanitarian crisis, while its attacks on Lebanon have caused the deaths of approximately 4,000 people. The Houthis, along with Hamas and Hezbollah, have positioned their actions as a united response to what they describe as Israeli aggression in the region.

This latest attack in Jaffa is part of a broader pattern of escalating violence. On Thursday, Israeli forces intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, though the resulting shrapnel caused significant damage to a school near Tel Aviv. In previous months, other incidents have highlighted the increasing reach and capability of these groups. In November, shrapnel from an intercepted Hezbollah rocket struck a building in the city, while in July, the Houthis claimed responsibility for a deadly drone strike in Tel Aviv, marking their first direct attack on the city.

The current conflict originated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an unprecedented assault on Israel, killing over 1,000 people and taking hundreds hostage. This attack triggered a war that has now spanned over 14 months, with no clear resolution in sight. As Israel continues its military operations, attacks from its adversaries across the region have intensified, challenging the country's defenses and further deepening the crisis.
